Birmingham side help launch People’s Cup
The FA People’s Cup 2018 has been launched, with a little help from a walking football side from Birmingham.
Birmingham Walking Football Club will take part in the tournament this year, and were on hand in a special launch event at The FA’s St George’s Park base.
During the day FA coaches led them through drills and skills to help them hone their skills ahead of the national event.
The final stages of this year’s tournament, which will take place in April, will be held at the Staffordshire training centre for the first time.
Entries to the event are now open. For more information visit www.TheFA.com/PeoplesCup
Midlothian volunteers head to the Caribbean
The reigning Scottish walking football champions spent a fortnight in Trinidad and Tobago helping to build homes and introduce walking football to the country.
The Midlothian side were among a team of 12 who headed to the Caribbean to promote the health and social benefits of playing the game.
The visit included a walking football tournament in Trinidad & Tobago’s national arena, the Hasely Crawford Stadium in the Port of Spain.
Ahead of the tournament two of the volunteers went on local TV to discuss the game and highlight its benefits.
Vivian Wallace, Ageing Well co-ordinator, told the Midlothian Advertiser: “This trip shows the power sport has in being able to raise awareness and change people’s lives.
“The people were so taken up by the sport. They have the same problems over here such as obesity.”
Widnes aim to reign in Spain.
Widnes Walking Football Club are aiming for success on the European stage as they prepare to head to a tournament in Benidorm.
The competition, which is for over 65s and will take place in May, will see walking footballers from around Europe descend on the popular holiday resort.
Widnes have already experienced success on the local stage, having made it to the semi-finals of the FA People’s Cup in Manchester last year.
The side, which was formed in 2015, experienced such demand that a waiting list began to develop and an extra session had to be launched.
